Bilberry Extract
Introduction
Bilberry Extract is derived from the ripe fruit of Vaccinium myrtillus L., a wild berry species native to Northern Europe, known for its deep purple-blue color and high anthocyanin content. It has been used for centuries in European herbal medicine to support vision, improve circulation, and maintain overall health.
The extract is rich in anthocyanidins, potent flavonoid antioxidants that help protect cells from oxidative stress, support microvascular health, and promote healthy vision. Bilberry anthocyanins are also studied for their potential role in reducing eye fatigue, improving night vision, and supporting cardiovascular wellness.
Commercial production involves harvesting ripe berries, cleaning, and low-temperature drying to preserve active compounds, followed by water–ethanol extraction. The concentrated extract is spray-dried into a fine purple powder, standardized to anthocyanidins ≥25%–36% using UV or HPLC methods.
