Cinnamon Bark Extract
Introduction
Cinnamon Bark Extract is obtained from the dried bark of Cinnamomum cassia or Cinnamomum verum, aromatic trees native to South and Southeast Asia. Cinnamon has been valued for thousands of years as both a spice and a medicinal herb in traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, and Middle Eastern herbalism.
The extract contains key active compounds such as cinnamaldehyde, cinnamic acid, and polyphenols, which exhibit antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and blood sugar-regulating properties. Compared to raw cinnamon powder, the extract offers a concentrated form of these bioactives, making it more potent and versatile for functional applications.
Commercial production involves cleaning and milling cinnamon bark, followed by water–ethanol extraction to obtain the aromatic and bioactive components. The extract is concentrated and spray-dried into a fine yellow-brown to reddish-brown powder. Specifications can be standardized to cinnamaldehyde ≥10%–20% or polyphenols ≥10%–30%, depending on application.
