Hibiscus Extract
Description
Hibiscus Extract is obtained from the dried calyces of Hibiscus sabdariffa, a tropical flowering plant widely cultivated in Africa, India, and Southeast Asia. Traditionally known as “Roselle,” hibiscus has been used in folk medicine for centuries as a cooling herbal infusion and natural remedy for supporting circulation, digestion, and overall wellness. Its vibrant red infusion is also a popular beverage worldwide.
The extract is standardized to contain anthocyanins (≥5%–25%), the main polyphenolic compounds responsible for its deep red pigment and antioxidant power. Scientific studies suggest that hibiscus anthocyanins contribute to cardiovascular health, help maintain healthy blood pressure, and support metabolic balance. Additional constituents such as flavonoids and organic acids provide complementary benefits for liver protection and oxidative stress defense.
Commercial production involves drying and milling of hibiscus calyces, followed by aqueous or hydro-ethanolic extraction and spray drying. The resulting powder is stable, water-soluble, and imparts both functional bioactivity and natural color. Hibiscus Extract is widely applied in nutraceuticals, functional beverages, teas, and antioxidant health products.
