Maitake Mushroom Extract
Introduction
Maitake contains a high concentration of beta-D-glucans, particularly the unique D-fraction and MD-fraction polysaccharides, which have been widely researched for their immune-modulating properties. It also contains proteoglucans, phenolic compounds, and ergosterol, contributing to its antioxidant and adaptogenic effects.
Commercial extraction uses carefully cultivated fruiting bodies, dried and finely milled, followed by hot-water extraction to release water-soluble polysaccharides and bioactives. The extract is concentrated and spray-dried to form a fine brown powder with a slightly earthy flavor. Standardized products are available with polysaccharides ≥30%–50% or beta-D-glucans ≥15%.
Maitake Mushroom Extract is derived from the fruiting body of Grifola frondosa, a highly valued edible and medicinal mushroom known as “Hen of the Woods” in the West. It has been traditionally consumed in East Asia for promoting vitality, longevity, and immune health.
