Description

Marshmallow Root Extract is derived from the roots of Althaea officinalis, a perennial herb native to Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa. For centuries, marshmallow root has been used in traditional European and Ayurvedic medicine as a soothing herb for the throat, stomach, and urinary tract. Its natural mucilage content makes it especially valuable for easing irritation of mucous membranes.

The extract is standardized to polysaccharides (≥10%–30%), which are responsible for its demulcent and soothing properties. These bioactive compounds form a protective layer on mucous membranes, helping to relieve throat discomfort, calm coughs, and support digestive and urinary wellness. In addition, marshmallow root contains flavonoids and phenolic acids that contribute antioxidant and mild anti-inflammatory benefits.

Commercial production involves cleaning and drying of the roots, followed by aqueous extraction to concentrate mucilage polysaccharides. The resulting fine light brown powder is stable under dry storage and partially soluble in water. Marshmallow Root Extract is widely applied in herbal syrups, lozenges, digestive health products, and functional supplements.
