Introduction

The extraction process generally starts with fresh or dried pomegranate peel or whole fruit, as the peel contains higher concentrations of punicalagins compared to the juice. Using water–ethanol extraction followed by concentration and purification, standardized extracts with high polyphenol content can be produced. Depending on the intended application, extracts can be standardized to punicalagins ≥40%, ellagic acid ≥10%, or total polyphenols ≥40% by HPLC/UV.

Physically, Pomegranate Extract is a reddish-brown fine powder with a mild fruity astringent flavor, soluble in water or ethanol. It is stable under dry, cool storage conditions. Globally, it is a popular ingredient in nutraceuticals, functional foods, and cosmetics, benefiting from a strong “superfruit” marketing profile and consumer familiarity.
