Introduction

Physically, Pomegranate Peel Extract is a brown to reddish-brown fine powder, with a slightly astringent taste, and is soluble in water and ethanol. It is stable under dry, cool storage conditions. Owing to its strong antioxidant profile, antimicrobial activity, and plant-based origin, it is widely used in nutraceuticals, functional foods, cosmetics, and natural preservatives.

Pomegranate Peel Extract is derived from the outer rind of the pomegranate fruit (Punica granatum L.), which is exceptionally rich in polyphenols, particularly punicalagins, ellagic acid, gallic acid, and flavonoids. Compared to pomegranate juice or pulp, the peel contains significantly higher concentrations of these bioactive compounds, making it a potent source of natural antioxidants and functional ingredients.

Commercial production typically uses dried and milled pomegranate peels from fresh fruit processing. The extraction process involves water–ethanol solvent extraction, followed by filtration, concentration, and spray drying. Depending on market requirements, the extract can be standardized to punicalagins ≥40%, ellagic acid ≥10%, or total polyphenols ≥40% by HPLC/UV methods.
