Valerian Root Extract
Description
Valerian Root Extract is derived from the roots and rhizomes of Valeriana officinalis, a perennial herb native to Europe and Asia, long used in traditional European herbal medicine as a calming and sleep-promoting remedy. Valerian has been widely consumed as teas, tinctures, and extracts for its relaxing effects and support for nervous system balance.
The extract is standardized to valerenic acids (≥0.3%–1.0%), the primary active compounds associated with sedative and anxiolytic effects. Valerenic acids, together with volatile oils and flavonoids, act on the central nervous system to promote relaxation, reduce occasional stress, and support healthy sleep quality. Modern studies confirm valerian’s value as a natural aid for rest and nervous system wellness.
Commercial production involves drying and milling of valerian roots, followed by aqueous–ethanolic extraction and spray-drying. The resulting fine brownish-yellow powder is stable under proper storage, partially soluble in water, and suitable for use in dietary supplements and herbal teas. Valerian Root Extract is one of the most recognized natural sleep-support ingredients worldwide.
